About
Hands down the biggest blessing airline employees have is the
free (or at least heavily discounted) standby rides around the world. The second biggest blessing we have is each other. And I’m not just talking about the ability to
find a willing travel buddy in half the time it takes you to walk to the break
room, but mostly I’m talking about the tips and tricks we share with each
other.
As an airline employee, the first thing you do when you find
some empty seats somewhere is raid your mental file cabinets for who you know
has been there before, and then you pin them down in the hallway and they are
always more than willing to share the highlights of that trip and, more
importantly, what they wish they had known before they went. Let me tell you, there is a HUGE difference
in quality between a trip that you plan completely on your own and a trip that
you’ve gotten the skinny on from someone else who had to stumble through it
first. And knowing these kinds of things
is crucial when you only have a short amount of time to stay somewhere, as so
many of us do (thank you, corporate America).
And that’s how this blog was born. Mostly to share the things I wish I had known
so that you can have smoother sailing and make the absolute most out of the
limited time you get somewhere. Of
course, I also love food and photos as much as the next blogger, so there will
be a fair amount of that, too. But there’s
something here for everyone – quick trips, long trips, bucket list trips, nature
trips, touristy trips, off-the-beaten-path trips, posh trips, budget trips, you name it.
So stay a while and let what I've learned in my standby travels stand by you when you experience the world.
